A new database has been set up based on statistics from member states, the ALURES database, which aggregates national data (transmitted each year) into three sections.

  • Section 1 : Numbers of animals used for the first time (excluding reuses) for scientific and educational purposes, by species, by origin, with a focus on non-human primates
  • Section 2: Details of all uses: first use / re-use; purpose of use; distribution by severity; genetic status
  • Section 3: Numbers and uses of animals for the creation and maintenance of genetically altered animals (not included in sections 1 and 2), providing details by species, type of research, stage of severity.

Each year, a global report is produced, bringing together data from national surveys, providing a summary and data by country. Since 2018, the report has included Norway. Since 2020, the United Kingdom is no longer included.

These reports are available on this page.

The European Commission’s aim is to make this data more reactively accessible in the future, in the interests of transparency, as outlined in this brochure: click here
